Narrated Alqama: I went to Sham with a group of the companion of `Abdullah (bin Ma `ud). Abu Ad-Darda' heard of our arrival o he came to u and aid, "I there anybody among you who can recite (Qur'an)" We replied in the affirmative. Then he a ked, "Who i the be t reciter?" They pointed at me. Then he told me to recite, o I recited the ver e:-- 'By the night a it envelop 'By the day a it appear in brightne ; By (Him Who created) male and the female.' (92.1-3) Abu Ad-Darda' then aid to me, "Did you hear it (like thi ) from the mouth of your friend (`Abdullah bin Ma `ud)?" I aid, "Ye ." He aid, "I too, heard it (like thi ) from the mouth of the Prophet, but the e people do not con ider thi recitation a the correct one."

حَدَّثَنَا قَبِيصَةُ بْنُ عُقْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ، عَنِ الأَعْمَشِ، عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، عَنْ عَلْقَمَةَ، قَالَ دَخَلْتُ فِي نَفَرٍ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ الشَّأْمَ فَسَمِعَ بِنَا أَبُو الدَّرْدَاءِ فَأَتَانَا فَقَالَ أَفِيكُمْ مَنْ يَقْرَأُ فَقُلْنَا نَعَمْ‏.‏ قَالَ فَأَيُّكُمْ أَقْرَأُ فَأَشَارُوا إِلَىَّ فَقَالَ اقْرَأْ‏.‏ فَقَرَأْتُ ‏{‏وَاللَّيْلِ إِذَا يَغْشَى * وَالنَّهَارِ إِذَا تَجَلَّى * وَالذَّكَرِ وَالأُنْثَى‏}‏‏.‏ قَالَ أَنْتَ سَمِعْتَهَا مِنْ فِي صَاحِبِكَ قُلْتُ نَعَمْ‏.‏ قَالَ وَأَنَا سَمِعْتُهَا مِنْ فِي النَّبِيِّ صلى الله عليه وسلم وَهَؤُلاَءِ يَأْبَوْنَ عَلَيْنَا‏.‏
