Narrated Abu Burda: Allah' Me enger (ﷺ) ent Abu Mu a and Mu`adh bin Jabal to Yemen. He ent each of them to admini ter a province a Yemen con i ted of two province . The Prophet (ﷺ) aid (to them), "Facilitate thing for the people and do not make thing difficult for them (Be kind and lenient (both of you) with the people, and do not be hard on them) and give the people good tiding and do not repul e them. So each of them went to carry on hi job. So when any one of them toured hi province and happened to come near (the border of the province of) hi companion, he would vi it him and greet him. Once Mu`adh toured that part of hi tate which wa near (the border of the province of) hi companion Abu Mu a. Mu`adh came riding hi mule till he reached Abu Mu a and aw him itting, and the people had gathered around him. Behold! There wa a man tied with hi hand behind hi neck. Mu`adh aid to Abu Mu a, "O `Abdullah bin Qai ! What i thi ?" Abu Mu a replied. "Thi man ha reverted to Heatheni m after embracing I lam." Mu`adh aid, "I will not di mount till he i killed." Abu Mu a replied, "He ha been brought for thi purpo e, o come down." Mu`adh aid, "I will not di mount till he i killed." So Abu Mu a ordered that he be killed, and he wa killed. Then Mu`adh di mounted and aid, "O `Abdullah (bin Qai )! How do you recite the Qur'an ?" Abu Mu a aid, "I recite the Qur'an regularly at interval and piecemeal. How do you recite it O Mu`adh?" Mu`adh aid, "I leep in the fir t part of the night and then get up after having lept for the time devoted for my leep and then recite a much a Allah ha written for me. So I eek Allah' Reward for both my leep a well a my prayer (at night).

حَدَّثَنَا مُوسَى، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو عَوَانَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ، عَنْ أَبِي بُرْدَةَ، قَالَ بَعَثَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صلى الله عليه وسلم أَبَا مُوسَى وَمُعَاذَ بْنَ جَبَلٍ إِلَى الْيَمَنِ، قَالَ وَبَعَثَ كُلَّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا عَلَى مِخْلاَفٍ قَالَ وَالْيَمَنُ مِخْلاَفَانِ ثُمَّ قَالَ ‏ "‏ يَسِّرَا وَلاَ تُعَسِّرَا، وَبَشِّرَا وَلاَ تُنَفِّرَا ‏"‏‏.‏ فَانْطَلَقَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا إِلَى عَمَلِهِ، وَكَانَ كُلُّ وَاحِدٍ مِنْهُمَا إِذَا سَارَ فِي أَرْضِهِ كَانَ قَرِيبًا مِنْ صَاحِبِهِ أَحْدَثَ بِهِ عَهْدًا، فَسَلَّمَ عَلَيْهِ، فَسَارَ مُعَاذٌ فِي أَرْضِهِ قَرِيبًا مِنْ صَاحِبِهِ أَبِي مُوسَى، فَجَاءَ يَسِيرُ عَلَى بَغْلَتِهِ حَتَّى انْتَهَى إِلَيْهِ، وَإِذَا هُوَ جَالِسٌ، وَقَدِ اجْتَمَعَ إِلَيْهِ النَّاسُ، وَإِذَا رَجُلٌ عِنْدَهُ قَدْ جُمِعَتْ يَدَاهُ إِلَى عُنُقِهِ فَقَالَ لَهُ مُعَاذٌ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ قَيْسٍ، أَيَّمَ هَذَا قَالَ هَذَا رَجُلٌ كَفَرَ بَعْدَ إِسْلاَمِهِ‏.‏ قَالَ لاَ أَنْزِلُ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ‏.‏ قَالَ إِنَّمَا جِيءَ بِهِ لِذَلِكَ فَانْزِلْ‏.‏ قَالَ مَا أَنْزِلُ حَتَّى يُقْتَلَ فَأَمَرَ بِهِ فَقُتِلَ ثُمَّ نَزَلَ فَقَالَ يَا عَبْدَ اللَّهِ، كَيْفَ تَقْرَأُ الْقُرْآنَ قَالَ أَتَفَوَّقُهُ تَفَوُّقًا‏.‏ قَالَ فَكَيْفَ تَقْرَأُ أَنْتَ يَا مُعَاذُ قَالَ أَنَامُ أَوَّلَ اللَّيْلِ فَأَقُومُ وَقَدْ قَضَيْتُ جُزْئِي مِنَ النَّوْمِ، فَأَقْرَأُ مَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لِي، فَأَحْتَسِبُ نَوْمَتِي كَمَا أَحْتَسِبُ قَوْمَتِي‏.‏
